With all the appliances at our fingertips today, we just seem to take them all for granted. Even the dear old seniors don’t relate back much to the days when they didn’t have all these commodities. Sometimes though it can be a real eye opener if we allow ourselves to envision being without the many items that we have that makes our life so easy when it comes to daily living.
Let’s take a look at our fridge for example. The most praise we give it is when it manages to remain clean for a few days. Think about if you didn’t have it though. Your food bill would go through the roof because there would be no way to preserve your cold drinks, left overs or ice cream for that matter. These would be things you would just have to do without. Unless of course there is one of those old icemen still around. This was the guy that would deliver big blocks of ice to the homes so people could keep their perishables for a day or two.
Ok so if worst came to worst the fridge would may be one of the home appliances that we could give up for a short time. How about your stove? No baking, no cooking in luxury. Yes, you could turn to a wood stove, but that really would be roughing it. However, you wouldn’t have much of a choice. I suppose you could resort to a barbecue but that can be pretty miserable standing out in the rain or snow trying to cook a meal that is a necessity.
So what other home appliances do we have to be grateful for? Of course, there is the washer and dryer. Now the dryer we really can live without. After all many people, choose to hang their clothes out where they dry in the nice fresh air. However, there is a dryer sitting in the laundry room for backup for those rainy days. Taking a look at the washer though makes the thought of not having it as almost unbearable. It is unimaginable to think of having to wash our clothes by hand. Yet the materials of today would be lot easier to wash by hand then the heavy linens, wools and denims of years ago.
Therefore, we have talked about the major home appliances and just why we should appreciate them and perhaps not take them quite so for granted. How about all those miscellaneous small home appliances though? I think they should be in our appreciation thoughts as well, I know that they are in mine!
